Fireproof building material dumpsters in Australia
We don’t want to know if we’ve got the right building material for our homes, says the head of the Federal Government’s fireproofing strategy.
“If we don’t know the right materials, if we don\’t have the right tools, then it\’ll be hard to build a fireproof home,” Assistant Fire Commissioner Michael Rippon said.
He also warned that “the building industry is in a bit of a bind” about building materials.
”The materials we have to build are not the same as what people need, and that\’s not the case at all,” Mr Rippons comments.
What we need to know about building fireproof materials is “there\’s a very small supply of building material in the world right now, and we know that from the scientific literature”, he says.
But, he adds, there are some important points to consider before deciding whether to build with fireproof material.
First, there\’s the “compartmentalisation” issue.
A lot of the material is sold in large quantities.
That means a lot of different materials can be used at once.
For example, if you have an insulated drywall container, it can be mixed with a similar-looking drywall, which means the materials can interact in a way that creates a new layer of insulation.
The same can happen with other materials, such as a wood-block insulation, which creates a second layer of fireproof.
However, the amount of material that can be combined is limited, and the amount used must be controlled, so it is important to ensure that the product meets the same quality standards as the other materials.
Second, there is a “resilience” issue with fire-resistant materials.
”There\’s this idea that if we just go ahead and use a fire-proofing product and that makes it resistant to fire, that\’ll solve all the problems we have, and everything\’s good,” Mr Wahlstrom said.”
But in reality, the only way to protect yourself against fire is to use a good fire-suppressing product.
It is important that all Australians are prepared for extreme heat, and can protect themselves from fire when it does strike.””
We want to encourage companies to ensure they are using materials that meet standards that can withstand the most extreme conditions, such an extreme heat wave,” the statement said.
