How to Build a Bali Building from the Ground Up
Posted October 05, 2019 06:21:56 “A bali is an interesting building, because it’s not just a house but a space,” says Andrew, a self-described “building enthusiast” and designer from London.
“It has a lot of space, and it has to have its own space.
The space can be a space of the house, or you can have a space in the garden.”
Andrew is currently working on his next project, an entire home for a group of five friends, all in the same building.
The three apartments will be in Bali and be constructed from locally sourced materials.
“I had this idea to make it out of a building material, and I found the material, which is called bali, really easy to work with,” he explains.
“So, I just put it in a bag and I went to the local bank to get a sheet of it, and then I went out and I got the materials, and they said, ‘You can make a bali out of this sheet of material’.
So I just did.”
A Bali is a unique building, but you can easily build your own from scratch with a sheet.
You can get a Balis from any number of places: you can buy them at a garage sale, in a local shop, or by the block.
And unlike houses, which are built from a material called clay, bali are constructed from wood, stone, and other natural materials.
Andrew, who says that he “wouldn’t want to build a house if I didn’t know how to make one,” has found that these materials are incredibly simple to work.
He says that a simple house should look something like this:The basics are: a roof, a wall, a ceiling, and a roof-top bali that’s been cut down into sections.
“The roof is the first piece, the wall is the second piece, and the ceiling is the third piece,” he says.
“Then, I put in some doors, so it can be more open, and this is a kitchen, which can be open or closed, so you can put in a bed, and you can also put in the laundry.”
The walls are made of wood, and are constructed using an old-fashioned brick kiln, but Andrew has found it easy to use the same technique to build the rest of the building.
“Once you have the kiln cut down, the second step is the plaster, and that is the hardest part of it,” he continues.
“You can just put in plaster all the way through, but the kilns, and all the work that goes into it, they’re very efficient and you have to have the right kind of machine.
So, that is very difficult.”
The bali itself, which measures a whopping 40 square feet (3.2 square metres), is constructed from 1.5 kilograms of bali.
It takes about a month to build, which Andrew says is a good time to get started.
“For most people, a building is a lot more than just a single room.
It’s a living space, it’s a dining room, it can also be a living room and kitchen, and so on,” he said.
“We don’t need to make a lot, we don’t have to add lots, but there is a limit to how much we can put together.”
Andrew has built a Balista in the space of a few days, and he says that it’s “an absolute pleasure” to have a project like this in his back pocket.
He’s looking forward to seeing how his Balista will evolve in the future.
“Hopefully I’ll be able to take it out into the community and build it,” Andrew says.
