India to start construction on its first solar power plant by 2020
The Indian government has decided to build a 1,200MW solar power project on a site in the Suncoast region of Kerala, a government official said.
The official, who asked not to be named, said the project was approved in February, and construction would begin in the third quarter of 2020.
The project would have a capacity of 1,220MW, according to the official.
India has been considering solar power as a replacement for coal, and has installed about 1GW of solar power capacity in the last year.
It has been the world’s second-largest producer of solar panels.
India plans to build solar power plants on about 100,000 acres of land in the region.
